ISLAND

My toughts are always moving. Finding focus is a journey. When I finally arrive, it feels like landing on an island. I am still and safe. I don't want to leave. This series is about that place. I wanted to paint something I could disappear into. With Island I went back to my earlier work and went deeper into it. Less distraction, more shape, more trust. Some colours took days to find. The right combination is in perfect balance with each other. I'm drawn to artists who search for the same kind of stillness - the meditative lines of Agnes Martin, the energy of Isabella Ducrot.

Anne Olde Kalter paints in Waterland, in the backyard of Amsterdam. Island is her most recent series.
